About the speaker:
Dr Timothy Tong has been the Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) since July 2007. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities since 2008 and the Vice Chairman of the International Senior Advisory Board, International Anti-Corruption Academy since 2010. Dr Tong graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1972. He obtained a doctorate degree in Criminal Law from the Renmin University of China in 2008.

Our new Self Check-out station, located on the G/F of the Chung Chi Library (just opposite the Circulation Counter), enables library users to check their books out by themselves.

The station displays easy-to-understand instructions on its screen. Simply insert your library card and have the barcodes on the books scanned. As soon as you are all done, press "Finish & Print Receipt" on the screen. A receipt listing each book you borrowed and its due date will be printed for your record. Take your receipt and pack up your books. It's that easy! You can check out your books without having to get assistance from the library staff.

Need help using the Self Check-out station for the first time (or at any time)? The staff at the Circulation Counter would be glad to assist.

Library users may borrow and return books by using the self-service while the Counter service is not available during the extended opening hours. A self-check-out machine and book drop is available at the G/F of Chung Chi College Library.

陳希我，小說家。文學博士。曾留學日本，現居中國大陸。主要作品有小說《抓癢》、《我們的苟且》、《冒犯書》、《大勢》、《去偷，去搶》、《我愛我媽》，文學研究專著《享虐的文學》等。曾被《中華讀書報》評為年度文學新銳人物，曾連續三屆獲得“華語文學傳媒大獎”的提名，作品入選多種選本、獲若干文學獎或進入年度排行榜，《鳳凰週刊》稱其作品是“活脫脫人性陰暗的浮世繪”，也因此頻頻引起爭議和被查禁。他的《冒犯書》被禁後，他向大陸當局的審查制度發出了挑戰，向法院提出起訴，引起了極大的反響。他是中國文學作家中反抗查禁制度的第一人。

Using New 10-digit University Student ID (USID) to Login to Your Library Account (Effective July 1, 2010)

The Steering Committee on the Development of CUSIS has announced that student ID number will change from an 8-digit to a 10-digit format. The new 10-digit University Student ID (USID) will come into effect on July 1, 2010. Details of the change are available from the CUSIS website.

To align with the change, effective July 1, 2010, all students (except students graduating in July/Aug 2010) should use their new 10-digit USID when they login to their library account to use library resources.

Since current students will not be requested to replace their CU Link cards due to the change of USID format (please refer to CUSIS for details), current students with CU Link card issued before July 2010 (except students graduating in July/Aug 2010) are reminded to enter "10" in front of the ID printed on their CU Link card (e.g. instead of 08123456, enter 1008123456) to login to their library account.
For other library users (including students graduating in July/Aug 2010), they can continue to enter the ID no. printed on their Student/Staff/Library card to login into their library account.

As a result of the CUSIS' One-Student-One-ID policy, current students who are now holding more than one USID due to enrolling in different programmes will be assigned one USID only. These students should note that the latest USID assigned may not be the one they selected originally to use the Library with. If this is the case, they need to go to the CU Link Card Centre to update their CU Link card before they can use the Library.

Please also refer to the library website on Temporary Suspension of Some Library Services during CUSIS Changeover Period (June 30 to July 1).

Digital Library Service for CUHK Retirees

The Library is pleased to announce the Digital Library Service for CUHK Retirees (DLSR) is now available as a one-year pilot scheme. DLSR will provide access to the selected library subscribed electronic resources including databases, electronic journals and electronic books from off campus.

CUHK retired staff members* who are also CUHK Library Card holders are eligible to apply for this service. The registration begins from 1st June 2010 and the service period is from January 1 to December 31, 2011. The CUHK retirees registered DLSR before Dec 31, 2010 will enjoy complimentary access within year 2010. The subscription fee is $200 per year. Application may be made at the University Library Circulation Counter by presenting a CUHK library card. Applicants who have not got a library card may apply for a library card at the same time by bringing along the certificate of retirement issued by the Personnel Office and a recent photo. Library e-book system

ULS eBook Initiative has converted some of our rare books, out-of-print books and books published during 1911 to 1949 to E-books for preservation and information sharing. Currently, the ULS eBook system provides more than 18,000 volumes of E-books. Due to copyright concern, these e-books can only be accessible at dedicated E-book Standalone Stations which are available at G/F Chung Chi Library.

Besides searching e-books at the eBook system, an “E-book standalone station” will be shown in the Library Catalogue when there is a digital copy available in our eBook system. You can locate the e-books by themselves at the dedicated Stations by using title or call number search. However, Printing and Download is strictly prohibited.

Google Scholar and Google Book Preview in Library catalogue

停用「還書日期紙」

為支持大學可持續發展的「你我攜手，共建綠色校園」，由二零一零年六月一日起，中文大學各圖書館之流通櫃檯將停用「還書日期紙」，不再為外借館藏蓋還書日期(指定參考書及聯合書院胡忠圖書館之多媒體館藏除外)。是項措施能使借書手續更簡便快捷，亦可避免外借館藏因被催還而被縮短借出時間所引起的誤會。

讀者如欲查詢所借館藏的還書日期，可以登入我的借閱記錄。此外，一般借期書籍〔十四天或以上〕到期前三天，讀者會經由電郵收到「即將到期通知」。讀者如想收到這些「即將到期通知」，必須在我的借閱記錄中新增或更新你的電郵地址。

終止圖書館增值機及 Payflex 設施服務

因應大學新推出之智能證件及為「中大通」打印戶口增值之「網上充值系統」，圖書館內的增值機將於2011年8月31日起終止服務。此外，圖書館亦將會以非接觸式智能圖書證取代現行之 Payflex 智能卡，故現有用 Payflex 扣除影印/打印費用之設施將於2012年8月31日終止服務。

職此之故，圖書館現行之影印/打印卡及具備影印及打印功能之智能圖書證將會被淘汰，請讀者在 Payflex 設施終止服務前盡量用完卡內之餘額。

Is it possible to create a mirror of the original? To what extent does a translator have the opportunity to discuss a work's nuances with the author? We are happy to announce a new eXpress printing service is now available at Chung Chi Library.

It's convenience and fast. A dedicated eXpress printer is located at the G/F and is for printing only. You can open the Microsoft Office files and PDF at the workstation and print it out. The eXpress printer is charged by Octopus. Colour printout charges $2.5 per page (A4) and black & white printout charges $0.3 per page (A4). Please be reminded that all the files cannot be saved in the dedicated workstation.

Yesterday, our former Vice-Chancellor Professor Charles K. Kao, has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his "groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication".

Opening hours when University is in session

All the Libraries have resumed the normal opening hours when University is in session. Chung Chi Library opens as follows:

Monday - Friday 8:20 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Saturday 8:20 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m

The Late Reading Room at the G/F of CCL opens as follows:
Monday - Friday 9:30 pm -- 9:00 am (the next day)
Saturday 6:30 pm -- 9:00 am (the following Monday)

Please also note the opening hours in holidays.

Revamped Library Homepage

You may already notice that a new Library homepage is now released! All the info is arranged on one page so that it's easy to navigate. The catalogues will assist you to locate book and article info instantly. The event calendar is a new feature to allow you knowing what's going to happen in the Library.

Few months ago the Library had formed a focused group to give advice on the re-design of the Library homepage. Most of the suggestions are accommodated in this revamp exercise and hopefully you will find it useful. Should you have any comment on the new Library homepage please don't hesitate to let us know.

Summer reads - Mind Mapping

Do you have good memory? Or do you want to be more efficient? Try using mind map!

"A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. It is used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing. The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories." from Wikipedia.

In other words, try to draw your ideas and connect with other points by using diagram. There are software or website to help you drawing mind map (such as MindMeister, FreeMind). You may also checkout the books written by Tony Buzan from the Library, who is a proponent of the techniques of mind mapping.

New features at Cat2

Rating and tagging is now available on Cat2! You can rate your favorite books and share with others.
After you search a book on Cat2, you will see the "stars" of the corresponding book where you can click the number of "start" for rating. Moreover, you can click "add a tag" next to the rating and add in your own tag for this book. You will be prompted to login by using your Library card number and password in order to proceed.

All the ratings and tags on Cat2 are visible to all users. You can share your favorite books with others. Let's start rating and tagging your favorite books!

Help to save the planet now! You can register your email address at the Library catalogue. Simply logon to your “My Library Record”, click Add/Update your E-mail Address and enter or update your email address.

By registering an updated email address with the Library, you will receive all important notifications from the Library, including Coming Due Alert, Hold Pickup, Recall or Overdue notices in a timely manner. In addition, an updated email address is required for eligible users to apply for online Library services such as Inter-Branch Book Delivery Online Requests and the JULAC Library Card Online Application.

With the launch of the online email registration/update service, in-person registration/update of email address at the University Library System circulation counters and via emails will be terminated after December 31st, 2009.

Manage your research papers - Zotero

Zotero is a Firefox free add-on that helpers users to manage and collect webpages and articles using the FireFox web browser. Unlike Mendeley, Zotero is attached to the web browser and detects when a book, article, or other resource is being viewed and with a mouse click finds and saves the full reference information to a local file. Other features like snapshot, add notes, import and export in varies formats are also available in Zotero. Try it out and start managing your research materials.

Manage your reseach papers - Mendeley

If you have used Endnote or RefWorks, you should know what a reference management tool is. It helps you to organize your research readings in systematic way and add the bibliographic citations in your essay. The Library has purchased a site license of RefWorks and all CUHK eligible users may create their own account at this website.

There is a freeware called Mendeley which you can download here. It allows your to synchronize your bibliographic database to their web serve. Moreover, you can highlight and add notes on the full-text file. It supports import and export of database in different formats including Endnote XML. Try this out and organize your research papers now!

任繼愈教授

任繼愈教授於7月11日逝世，享年93歲。

任教授為著名哲學家、宗教學家、歷史學家，1938年北京大學哲學系畢業。任教授1964-1985年任中國科學院世界宗教研究所所長；1987年至2005年1月，任國家圖書館館長，兼北京大學教授；2005年至今擔任中國國家圖書館名譽館長。

任教授曾領導大規模的傳統文化的資料整理工作。1980年代開始，他領導了《中華大藏經（漢文部份）》的整理和編纂工作。同時，他又主持編纂《中華大典》，亦主持編寫《宗教大辭典》、《佛教大辭典》、新修《二十四史》。

任教授就任國家圖書館館長期間，積極推進圖書館建設，為繁榮發展國家圖書館事業作出了重大貢獻。國圖館藏圖書2500多萬冊，尤其是珍品特藏包括善本古籍、甲骨金石拓片、中國古舊輿圖、敦煌遺書、少數民族圖籍、名人手稿、中國少數民族文獻、革命歷史文獻、家譜、地方志和普通古籍等260萬冊（件）。

季羨林教授

國學大師季羨林教授於7月11日上午9時辭世，享年98歲。

季羨林教授是著名語言學家、文學家及翻譯家。他對印度語、原始佛教語言、吐火羅文、梵文文學等研究均作出重大貢獻。他精通英語、德語、梵文、巴利文及吐火羅文。

季教授於1934年在北京清華大學外語系畢業，其後負笈德國，入讀著名的哥廷根大學，主修印度學，學習梵文、巴利文、吐火羅文等語言及文化。1941年，季教授取得哲學博士學位；至1946年回國，受聘於北京大學任東方語言文學系教授兼系主任。

季教授的主要著作有《糖史》、《天竺心影》、《留德十年》、《原始佛教的語言問題》、《印度古代語言論集》、《中印文化關係史論文集》、《牛棚雜憶》，譯作有《羅摩衍那》、《沙恭達羅》、《優哩婆濕》、《大唐西域記校注》等。季教授曾於1987及1988年訪問香港中文大學，出席文物館舉辦的國際敦煌吐魯番學術會議及文物展覽，並於2002榮獲中大頒授榮譽文學博士學位，表揚季教授在學術上的卓越成就。

Minor works at CC Library
